http://hathor-9.livejournal.com/11168.html
http://ancientrome.ru/publik/martynov/mar01.htm

From the theological point of view, he apparently regarded the Sphinx as a type of the Sun-god in all his phases, as is clearly shown by the name "Hor-em-akhet-Kheperi-Ra-Atum".

http://refill.ru/egypt/oleg-pdfs/Vassil ... yramid.pdf

The Sun Temples of the V Dynasty: a reassessment.
http://www.anse-egypt.com/articles/Nuzz ... 6_2007.pdf

ON THE ORIENTATION OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TEMPLES:
(3) KEY POINTS AT LOWER EGYPT AND SIWA OASIS, PART I
Two of them, II and III,are obviously solar,38 while another two, IV and V, are apparently associated with the brightest stars in the ancient Egyptian skies. The other three (I, VI and VII) would form a singular super-family of cardinal orientations and it is not clear yet whether we should include them in the solar or in the stellar groups. Families VI and VII are most probably stellar and we will find further support for this hypothesis in the study cases in Part II.
http://www.m-shaltout.com/papers/Belmonte3.pdf

The usual number is 12 gates, corresponding to the 12 hours of night, but variants with eight or ten gates also are known to exist. These would simply represent star clocks with 8 or 10 constellations used to predict sunrise.

Among astronomical orientations, there were three, and only three, kind of targets. One was
probably related to different celestial configurations of the stars of Meskhetyu in order to get
a near or accurate Meridian orientation. This primary axis could have been rotated later by
an eighth, a quarter or half a circumference to obtain any possible cardinal or quartercardinal
direction (families I, VI and VII). The second kind of targets had a markedly solar
character and was fundamentally related to important time-marks of the annual cycle and/or
the civil calendars (families I, II, II^ and III). Finally, the third group of targets was the two
brightest stars of ancient Egyptian skies, Sirius and Canopus (families IV and V,
respectively). These customs were present during most of Egyptian history55 and in the
different areas of the country, although some minor peculiarities have been discovered.

Petrie continued still referring to the red granite sphinx above:

"These sphinxes have passed through several appropriations, but they were executed in the 12th dynasty, to judge by the fineness of the work, and the treatment of the details. On the chest of the sphinx in the Louvre may be seen the finest traces of the so-called banner of a king, with a hawk above it. A fragment of the end of a sickle may also be distinguished on it, and this shows that it must be attributed to Amenemhet II. or Usertasen II.*) In the inscription (14D) is shown the trace of the end of the standard, and of the lines of hair appearing in the midst of the later cartouche. The next name is that of the Hyksos Apepi, of which I could only see the inscription (14F) on the right side of the base; there is also an erased Hyksos inscription, beginning with "Sutekh", on the right shoulder. After this Merenptah appropriated it, cutting out the earlier names with his usual brutality, and placing his cartouches on the right shoulder. Finally, Sheshonk I. - the great Shishak - occupied the left shoulder with his cartouches (14E), and cut a long inscription all around the base."

1. Ancient mortars can be classified into four main categories:
a. Gypsum mortars where gypsum is the main component
Nine samples were found consisting mainly of gypsum, while calcite is only present in
small proportions.
Such mortar compositions can be attributed to the Old Kingdom; the same composition
is known from a mortar sample collected from the Chephren pyramid.
b. Gypsum/lime or gypsum/ calcite mortars where calcite is present in relatively higher
concentrations in seven samples. Dolomite has been found in four of them. This type of
mortar represents a change in mortar composition, apparently not belonging to the Old
Kingdom as the previous ones. It may be attributed to New Kingdom restorations or to
Roman times?
c. Lime mortars consisting mainly of calcite with varying proportions of gypsum,
probably Roman?
d. Mortars used for the consolidation of the nemes headdress were known to consist
of lime and cement mixture (Garas, person. comm.). Another similar mortar sample was
collected from the abdomen zone on the left side.

Phase 4: Baraize (1925-1936)
Many centuries passed before the next phase of conservation was
undertaken, this time by Emile Baraize. For almost eleven years Baraize
cleared the area around the Sphinx to free it of sand. The scale of this
undertaking had its only precedent in the reign of Thutmose IV and in
the Roman period. This is made particularly clear by Baraize's records,
which comprise notes and 226 photographs.
Baraize's restoration program and its consequences are summarized
as follows:
1) Baraize's clearing operations revealed that the Old Kingdom stones
returned to their original positions by Thutmose were again falling down.
The records show that a crack located at top center divided the Sphinx
into two parts. The head was in poor condition. A large passage, the size
of which is indicated by the workmen standing in it, was open on the
north ridge. Baraize restored the head with cement, which at the time was
deemed necessary for its protection. But since we now know from the
UNESCO investigations that the upper part of the Sphinx is relatively
strong, it is now desirable to reverse this work. The cement restoration of
the head is not good and obscures the impressiveness of the Sphinx.
2) Baraize closed the northern passage with masonry. It would be
advantageous to open it in order to view the interior of the lion's body
and take samples. The northern side of the Sphinx is a big problem, as
the deterioration of the casing stones here is in a more advanced state.
3) Baraize restored the crack on the top of the Sphinx with cement and
replaced the Old Kingdom stones.
4) He also restored many other parts of the Sphinx, as recorded by
Lehner in 1979.
Baraize's work can be seen now on the left and right shoulders of the
Sphinx and on the southern shoulder, where he restored a fallen chunk
from the mother rock. Also parts on the south, north, and back of the
lion body were restored. However, most of Baraize's restorations have
been removed and readdressed with the new method currently in use
on the south side (see phase VI).

Thus, by all that can be so clearly seen of the well-marked styles
and characteristics of the different periods of Egyptian art and religion,
and by the titles here used, this tablet is relegated to the third
hypothesis, and stands as an invented inscription designed for the
decoration of the temple. This relieves us from an apparent anachronism,
as no trace of a Sphinx in statuary, tablets, or inscription,
is to be found until the twelfth dynasty; and such a form was not
common until after that. It would seem, therefore, to be an Asiatic
idea, akin to the human-headed lions, bulls, and dragons of Assyria
and Babylonia. In any case, the allusions to the Sphinx in this tablet
were merely topographical, and might be struck out or inserted without
altering the sense of i t ; hence, even if it were a refurbished copy
of an older inscription, it would not be of critical value in relation to
the age of the Sphinx unless its rigorous accuracy and freedom from
additions could be proved.

BRCHARDT
"The grouped stripes of the nemes appear only under the Twelfth Dynasty, perhaps even
only under Amenemhat Ill, because all the objects, with such an arrangement of stripes and
bearing a precise date, belong to his reign; for the other monuments classified as belonging
to the Twelfth Dynasty, it is not excluded that they do not represent Amenemhat Ill. For
this confined limitation of the stripes fashion only to the time of Amenemhat Ill, speaks
also the fact that the statues of Usertsen I (Benwesert I) from Lisht have no such groups, but
regular stripes.
"If we want to limit the period of the gronped stripes only to Amenemhat III or not;
in either case it remains a fact that, after the Twelfth Dynasty, this fashion does not appear
any more ...
" For dating the Giza Sphinx we deduct the following facts: As the head-dress of the
Sphinx has the broad stripe accompanied by the narrow stripes, the Sphinx can surely not
belong to a period coming after the Twelfth Dynasty. We would, thus, limit the age of
the Sphinx between two staves, an upper one and a lower one.
HALL
In my opinion, the Great Sphinx of Giza was erected after the completion of the Khafra
Pyramid Complex. The evidence which led me to this conclusion is the trench, which runs
down the northern side of the causeway leading from the Valley Temple to the Mort,Rary Temple
of Khafra. This trench, which measures about 2 metres wide and about 1'50 metres deep, is
cut in the rock, and, if contemporary with these monuments, served as a kind of division between
the Necropolis of Khufu on the north and that of Khafra on the south.
The same form of marking boundaries by means of shallow trenches can be seen in
conjunction with rock-cut mastabas, where they are usually cut in the upper surface of the
rock, to define the limits of the tomb.
In the case of the trench we are discussing, it stops abruptly at the western edge of the
cavity of the Sphinx (see Plan: PI. XVI). Now, in the case of a heavy rainfall, this trench would
act as a drain and discharge all its dirty water into the cavity of the Sphinx. Here, then, seems
to be a clear proof that the Sphinx was cut after the causeway, because had it existed before,
the excavators would never have continued cutting the trench right to the edge of the cavity,
it being unthinkable that the sacred enclosure of the God would become the receptacle for
drainage water, even periodically. However, when the Sphinx was cut, this state of affairs
was unavoidable, therefore the architects did their best by plugging the end of the trench with
great blocks of granite; and it is this which forms a convincing proof that the Sphinx was
a later addition to the Khafra Pyramid Complex, but not necessarily belonging to it.

The large slabs of Phase I masonry that cover the upper part of the passage are
clean and white and are cut from homogeneous fine-grained Turah-quality limestone.
As noted, they are part of the earliest and largest restoration work on the Sphinx in
ancient times when the entire lion body of the Sphinx was probably reconstructed
after the Member II bedrock of the core body had weathered considerably

We might consider the possibility that the lower casing blocks are part of an
earlier, IVth Dynasty, casing that finished off the lion body of the Sphinx. The three
courses of Phase I casing next to the bottom course are thicker than the blocks
immediately above them
In profile, the lower veneer of large blocks [fig. 2] looks like the masonry casing
on Old Kingdom mastabas at Giza, especially the casing that Reisner typed "x" and
"y"
A casing of fine Turah-quality limestone
blocks complete the sculpture of the body. The question is, was this casing begun
already in the IVth Dynasty, or was it entirely a reconstruction of a later
Pharaonic period?15 15. A core of natural rock with a casing of Turahq
u a l i t y limestone is similar to the way in which
the 4th Dynasty builders made a rough core for
the mastaba and pyramid tombs, and the Khafre
and Mcnkaure T e m p l e s , and then encased these
structures with a harder and finer quality of stone,
e i t h e r fine l i m e s t o n e or granite
The blocks above the lower three or four courses, are thinner, but they also have
the appearance of Old Kingdom casing; the range of their thickness is matched by
that of slabs forming the walls of the Khafre causeway near where it meets the Valley
Temple (0.36 m.- 0.38 m. is a common thickness). Nothing in the profiles exposed in
the passage suggests a structural break between the thick lower courses and those
above
As mentioned, it is clear that the natural
Member II bedrock of the core body was severely weathered before the application of
Phase I casing. The major obstacle in assigning Phase I to the IVth Dynasty as the
finish work for the Sphinx body, is the Phase I masonry fills in the deep recesses
caused by the weathering away of the softest beds.
They may have left the channel
because it had been cut too deeply into the intended profile of the lion body, or,
they may have intended to encase the crude bedrock profile in a masonry veneer,
and thereby conceal the channel, although the evidence indicates that this encasement
was only completed some 1,200 years later in the XVIIIth Dynasty.

THE PYRAMIDS AND TEMPLES OF EGYPT
AN UPDATE
DR. ZAHI HAWASS
Director General of Giza and Saqqara
More evidence showing that the Sphinx should be dated to Khafra is
cited by Lehner. He states that: " . . . the Khafra causeway is founded upon
a bridge of bedrock separating this quarry from the quarry in the west part
of the central field. It seems unlikely that Khufu would have reserved this
rock for his successor's causeway, and so the more northerly quarry may
have been exploited by Khafra."138
Fakhry points to similarities between the face of the Sphinx and the
faces of statues of Khafra.139 Also corroborating the dating of the Sphinx to
the time of Khafra is the Old Kingdom quarry in which it stands, and the
one most likely used by Khafra. The quarry would not have been used by
Khufu since he used the quarry located north of the Great Pyramid and east
of Khafra's pyramid. The existence of the tomb of Kahmerernebti I, one of
Khafra's queens, proves that the quarry was used by the end of Khafra's
reign; therefore, Khafra is the most likely king to have used it.

ZAHI HAWASS, Cairo
The Great Sphinx at Giza: Date and Function
Function of the Sphinx

The earliest Egyptian sphinx dates to the reign of Khufu's son and Khafra's
predecessor, Djedefra. The quartzite head and neck, found at Abu Roash and
now in the Louvre, represents the King 52. In -periods after the Old Kingdom,
sphinxes were clearly guardians, often set up along processional ways or at the
entrances to temples. Edwards and others, based on texts, dates to the Late Period
the Heliopolitan belief that the king becomes Ra after his death, suggesting that
the Sphinx represented Khafra as Ra and acted as the guardian of the Giza
necropolis 53 .

Finally, I propose another function for the Sphinx in the Old Kingdom which
could explain:
1. Why Khafra chose this location for the Sphinx.
2. Why the monument and its temple are unique and not repeated in the Old
Kingdom pyramid complex or in the architectural program of the Old Kingdom.
It is likely that the Sphinx represents Khafra as Horus giving offerings to his
father Khufu, the incarnation of Ra who rises and sets in the temple. The temple
is located to the north of Khafra's Lower Temple, in line with it and separated
from it by a narrow passage 67
• The main axis of the Sphinx Temple runs eastwest
and has two entrances, on the north and the south 68
• Ricke believes that the
eastern set of central stepped recesses are for a ritual to the rising sun and that
the western recesses are for the setting sun. He thinks the twenty four pillars around
the hall (six on each of the four sides) represent the twelve hours of the day and
the twelve hours of the night and that the two pillars in front of each of the two
sanctuaries represent the arms and the legs of the goddess Nut. The open court
is connected with the solar cult 69.
Stadelmann suggested that in the minds of the 4th Dynasty Egyptians, Khufu
became Ra himself, because in his opinion the name of Khufu's pyramid AkhetKhuju,
"The Horizon of Khufu", indicates that Khufu was equivalent to Ra, who
sets and rises each day on the horizon.
Furthermore, he notes that Djedefra and Khafra, the sons and immediate successors
of Khufu, were the first kings to bear the title S~ R C
, "Son of Ra", i.e.
their father, Khufu, was Ra. 70 I believe this theory is correct. There are additional
observations that I have developed to support this, which are:
I. The enlargement of the Upper Temple of Khufu and the abandonment of
Khufu's ritual pyramid 71.
http://www.gizapyramids.org/pdf%20libra ... _ice_6.pdf)

Khufu originally planned a cult pyramid where the
upper temple finally stood. The architect had excavated the substructure of the
cult pyramid (known as the trail passage) 72 from the rock surface east of Khufu's
Pyramid. Khufu changed his cult in year 5, therefore the Upper Temple was
enlarged and the angle of the causeway from the Upper Temple was changed. This
is why the "trial passage" was left without a superstructure. The Upper Temple
may have been modified to include the function of the cult pyramid. The new
cult that occured during Khufu's reign may have dispensed with the need for a
cult pyramid.
II. Most of the kings of the Old Kingdom who had a pyramid were buried
beneath it, with the exception of Khufu, who was buried higher up within it. The
186
pyramid shape is clearly related to the ben-ben, the pyramidal symbol of the sun
god at Heliopolis. The ben-ben was thought to be the true pyramid and the normal
burial chamber was placed under the pyramid as ben-ben since the 3rd Dynasty,
except for Khufu and Sneferu. A burial chamber within the ben-ben would identify
the king with Ra because the king then is actually Ra rising above the
horizon73.
III. In the wall reliefs that were found around the pyramid complex of Khufu
and decorated blocks probably from Khufu's complex that were found within the
Amenemhet I Pyramid at Lisht 74, there are no reliefs that show Khufu giving
offerings to the gods. The lack of this type of relief, may be due to the fact that
the new cult of Khufu and Ra would have equated the king with the god.
IV. Khufu's pyramid and that of Khafra are the only two pyramids which
have the so called air channels. Also there are five boat pits around the south side
and east side of the Great Pyramid, and Khafra has five boat pits around his Upper
Temple. These are unique and also are not part of the architectural program of
the Old Kingdom pyramid complex. The two southern boat pits are separated by
a wall of bedrock which is on the north-south axis of the Great Pyramid. One
of the two so-called air shafts is located on the central axis of the southern face
of the pyramid and is at right angles to the east-west axis of the two boats. The
so-called air channels and the five boat pits are likely to be connected with the
new cult of Ra75.
V. There are no temples built by Khufu for other gods. The statuette of Khufu
that was found at Abydos was not connected with a 4th Dynasty temple. The
statuette was found in building K which was constructed against a 6th Dynasty
gateway76.
VI. The Egyptians in the Late Period remembered Khufu from such Middle
Kingdom texts as the Westcar Papyrus and later the words of Herodotus. In the
26th Dynasty, Khufu's cult was renewed and his pyramid re-opened. In that time
this cult was so important as to warrant priests and his name being engraved upon
countless scarabs and amulets.
VII. Khufu's new cult may have been the first religious revolution in ancient
Egypt. There are also suggestions that the king dismissed the priests of Heliopolis
and organized his own cult at Giza. Khafra worshiped his father, Khufu, as Ra.
Not long afterward, perhaps in the First Intermediate Period the Egyptians a!~ost
destroyed his temples. Likewise the statues of Khafra found inside his lower temple
were smashed. This is a sign of revenge more than just theft. The destruction
may have been a reaction to the religious changes of Khufu and Khafra.
VIII. There are few private statues found in the reign of Khufu. The reserve
heads occur mainly in the time of Khufu. They may have functioned as substitutes
for the heads of the deceased, as sculptors models. In any case they are another
indication of changes during the reign of Khufu, perhaps to accommodate his new
cult 77.
IX. Khufu's Upper temple is the first to contain the five niches, according
to one reconstruction of the badly destroyed sanctuary. A suggestion is that four
niches were to house Khufu's four statues representing him as Ra and Horus and
the last niche was for a cult statue for Hathor. The Upper Temple of Khafra also
had five niches. Perhaps three of the statues represented Khafra as King; the other
two niches were perhaps for statues of Khufu as Ra, and of Hathor. Khafra may
have accepted his father Khufu as a god and worshiped him as Ra in his pyramid
complex.
X. Although Khufu designed his pyramid with a burial chamber beneath the
pyramid, this chamber was left unfinished. This change may have been made in
Khufu's Year 5 to accommodate the new cult by planning a chamber higher up
in the pyramid.
XI. Djedefra, the son who succeded Khufu, built his pyramid at Abu-Roash.
He ruled only 8 years. I suggest that the reason he did not build his pyramid next
to his father at Giza was that he did not accept his father's new cult.
XII. Khafra carved the Sphinx to present himself as Horus, Son of Ra, to
worship his father Ra in the Sphinx Temple. The layout of the Sphinx was designed
to be connected with the temple. It shows the sphinx (Khafra) giving offerings
in the temple to Ra (Khufu).
Khafra planned carefully for the location of the Great Sphinx. The main function
of the Sphinx and its temple was to accommodate the new cult initiated under
Khufu. The Sphinx represents Khafra as Horus giving offerings to his father Khufu,
the incarnation of Ra who rises and sets in the temple. Since Khafra was the son
of Khufu and Horus was the son of Ra, it seems reasonable to equate Khafra
with Horus and thus to identify Khafra with the Sphinx. Finally, the term AkhetKhufu
was the name of Khufu's pyramid. Thus the later name of the Sphinx
"Hor-em-akhet" could have recalled, for the New Kingdom Egyptians, the name
of the Khufu Pyramid. The Sphinx was "Horus in the Horizon of Khufu".

ZAHI A. HAWASS

The temple and the area surrounding it were
called Setepet, translated by Hassan as "the elect"
(plan: 13, 14).11
The Sphinx Temple lies to the north of Khafra's
lower temple, in line with it and separated from it, by a
narrow passage.12 It is located directly in front of the
Sphinx.13 The temple was built of local limestone and
cased on the inside with Tureh limestone, granite, and
alabaster. On the exterior, only the portals were lined
with granite.14 The temple was never completed S a core
block in situ in the north wall, which is abutted by Old
Kingdom debris, had not yet been dressed to receive the
granite sheathing which would have covered the wall had
the temple been completed.!5 The main axis of the temple
runs east-west.^
The temple has two entrances on the east, one
entrance on the north and the other on the south.
These may represent doorways for Upper and Lower Egypt.10
Although there were no traces of hinges found,
Maraglogllo and Rinaldi have suggested that the doorways
were closed with two-leaved doors
The northern rooms are lined with granite,
the southern rooms with alabaster.27 These rooms could
be interpreted aa magazines built to hold precious
objocts needed for the temple cult.
Against the masonry bounding the central court,
between the openings leading to the peripteral corridor,
are a series of rectangular depressions cut into the rock
floor. These may have held statues representing the
king who built the temple,28 small sphinxes,29 or
piliars.30 Abundant fragments of alabaster indicate that
the courtyard was paved with this material.31
Ricke and Schott, who studied the function of the
temple, believe that the eastern set of stepped recesses
are for a ritual to the rising sun, and that the western
recesses are for the setting sun. They think that the
twenty-four pillars around the hall (six on each side)
represent the twelve hours of the day and the twelve
hours of the night, and that the four pillars in front of
the two innermost recesses represent the arms and legs of
the goddess Nut. They believe that the open court is
connected with a solar cult32 or a temple to Ra. This
open court is similar to the courts of the upper temple
of Khufu and Khafra. Ricke interpreted this temple as
the temple of Hor-em-Akhet.33
A long narrow trench runs under the south wall of
the temple near its eastern end; it has been suggested
that this represents a drain that served the lower
terrace before the building of the temple.34 Lehner
suggests alternatively that it could represent a trench
used during quarrying operations as a "lead" for dropping
a reference point.35 This suggests that the 4th Dynasty
Egyptians worked with an economy of labor and material by
using large core blocks extracted during the cutting of
the sphinx sanctuary to build the Sphinx Temple
immediately to the east.36

The location of this temple in front of the Sphinx's
paws and its anomalous layout suggest that it was not a
temple dedicated to the funerary cult of one of the kings
buried at Giza, but was instead built to house the cult
connected with the Sphinx.37 xt has also been suggested
that it is a sun temple.38
The Sphinx and its temple were abandoned and robbed
in the First Intermediate Period or Middle Kingdom.39
The only Middle Kingdom artefact found in the area of the
Sphinx sanctuary was a faience scarab inscribed with the
title jmj-r3 ms(: "general ."40
The first known 4th Dynasty sphinx shape dates from
the reign of Khufu's son and Khafra's predecessor
Djedefra. The quartzite head and neck represents the
king, but otherwise its function is unknown.77 After the
Sphinxes in general are closely
associated with the sun god, as can be seen in
representations of sphinxes in the sacred boat of Ra from
the New Kingdom.*95 The connection between Khafra and
Horus can be seen in the diorite statue of the king which
shows the hawk behind his head and shoulders and the
generally accepted identification of all Egyptian kings
with Horus, as shown by their titularies.g6
Since Khafra was the son of Khufu and Horus was the
son of Ra, it seems reasonable, once we have equated
Khufu with Ra, to equate Khafra with Horus, and thus to
identify Khafra with the Sphinx. Finally, the term 3ht-
Hwfw was the name of Khufu's complex.9? Thus the later
name of the Sphinx, "Hor-em-akhet," can be interpreted as
Horus in the horizon of Khufu.

The Secrets
of the Sphinx

In addition, new evidence that has surfaced
independently of the conservation efforts contributes to our understanding of when the
Sphinx was abandoned and plundered. The new evidence confirms that a) Khafre build
the Sphinx in the Fourth Dynasty (ca. 2600 BC) for cultic purposes, and b) the Sphinx:
was not abandoned in the Middle Kingdom as some scholars have maintained, but
rather at the end of the Old Kingdom, and plundered thereafter during the First
Intermediate period (ca. 2150-2040 BC).

I. The enlargement of the Upper Temple of Khufu and the abandonment of Khufu's ritual pyramid 71.Khufu originally planned a cult pyramid where the upper temple finally stood. The architect had excavated the substructure of the cult pyramid (known as the trail passage) 72 from the rock surface east of Khufu's Pyramid. Khufu changed his cult in year 5, therefore the Upper Temple was enlarged and the angle of the causeway from the Upper Temple was changed. This is why the "trial passage" was left without a superstructure. The Upper Temple may have been modified to include the function of the cult pyramid. The new cult that occured during Khufu's reign may have dispensed with the need for a cult pyramid.

Conclusion
The conclusion must be that, at the 7:9 method of measurement has not been
observed in other buildings of the Old Kingdom but, in this period, has only been
used in the Cheop's complex's architecture both externally and internally, we can
deduct that, as the design of the Sphinx temple clearly bears the signs of the same
method of measurement, this temple must therefore be ascribed to the architect
of the Cheop's complex.

There have been a few other previous studies of note concerning weathering and erosion on the Giza Plateau. Emery (1960), and Said and Martin (1964) discussed briefly the weathering to the pyramids, but their work is not directly applicable to the present discussion. More pertinent to the topic at hand, El Aref and Refai (1 987) made a comprehensive macroscopic study of paleokarst processes and features on the Plateau, concentrating in particular on the area of the Sphinx enclosure. These authors pointed out many paleokarst features that are attributable to periods of seasonal rainfall. They illustrate and discuss solution holes, solution depressions, solution joints, symmetrical concentric cross-cutting diffusion fronts, and other dissolution features found on the body of the Sphinx and walls of the surrounding ditch. El Aref and Refai (1987, 376) note that "The karstic rocks are mantled by soil material and/or surficial calcareous duricrust. The solution features are partially or completely filled with clay precipitates together with concretions of iron and manganese oxides and collapse breccia fragments." (As a side note, these iron and manganese oxides often take on a red or ocher color. Lehner [ 1 991, 36] noted that "if you probe any seam in the masonry covering the lower part of the body [of the Sphinx], a red powder appears." This may simply be red earthy/clay material, typical karst sediments that one would expect in such a limestone terrane that has been subjected to weathering via precipitation. Lehner [1991] and Hassan [1949] have both suggested that the Sphinx and its surroundings were traditionally painted red. This putative red paint, however, may actually consist, in part, of natural weathering products of the rock, although the Sphinx may have been artificially painted red, as well). El Aref and Refai conclude (1987, 376) that "The development of these karst features and the associated sediments indicate that the study area was subjected to intensive seasonal rainfall and evaporation of temperate (Mediterranean) climatic conditions."

The Secrets
of the Sphinx
Restoration Past and Present
Phase 2: Saite Period (664-525 BC)
In 1853 Auguste Mariette found the so-called Inventory stela, or the stela of the daughter
of Cheops (Khufu). It was found on the east side of the Clc pyramid and dated to the
Twenty-sixth Dynasty. The stela indicates that the Sphinx was repaired in this period. To
this period may be attributed the major layer of restoration masonry on the upper part
of the Sphinx's body on the south side. This layer, composed of smaller slabs than those
of the Old Kingdom, was laid over the earlier (phase I) layer of Thutmose, the surface of
which was cut away in phase II, however, for fitting the new stones. It is important to
note here that the restorers did not remove the Old Kingdom stones from the Sphinx. The
Saite restoration also focused on the Sphinx's tail and on the nemes headdress. The
Egyptians of this period may also have painted the Sphinx. There is no evidence, however,
of any excavations around the base of the Sphinx. Even Herodotus is silent on the
Sphinx, suggesting that it was at least partially obscured by sand.

XI. Djedefra, the son who succeded Khufu, built his pyramid at Abu-Roash.
He ruled only 8 years. I suggest that the reason he did not build his pyramid next
to his father at Giza was that he did not accept his father's new cult.
